Seeing hundreds of female and young elephant seals is a wonderful bonus to the trip to Hearst Castle--as if the Castle wasn't enough. They cover 3 beaches just north of the Castle on US 1 and if you didn't know better, you would think the beach is covered with bodies---they are sleeping so soundly. Every once in awhile they move a flipper to cover themselves with sand(picture 3) and then go back to sleep. The males, at this time, are out to sea but will return this winter.
