Of the 21 missions in California, we decided to visit the Mission at San Juan Capistrano. The living areas as well as the gardening, tanning, tallow making and blacksmithing areas are well preserved. The mission served as an almost completely self-sufficient community. A self guided audio tour explained life as it was in the late 1700's and early 1800's.
