August 13,
We decided to take a bus trip to Victoria, British Columbia. The bus picked us up right in front of the campground. We went to the ferry, which took an hour and half to cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The bus, then went straight to The Buchart Gardens. We spent two and half hours exploring the prettiest 55 acre garden we've ever seen. The gardens were started over a hundred years ago when Jennie Butchart's husband quarried limestone in their backyard.
She started with the sunken garden to hide that quarry-top picture and went on to have a rose garden, Japanese garden and Italian garden. She added ponds and fountains. Today there are boat rides from their marina in the cove, a carousel, restaurants, fireworks on the weekends and a gift shop selling the seeds of flowers grown there.
But the bottom line is the gardens, pictures will never do them justice. 55 gardeners are employed year round(more in the spring and summer) and the gardens are open year round. Entire beds are replaced overnight when need be and every flower is in perfect bloom. They have dinner plate dahlias that are the size of dinner plates and roses that bloom all season. Wilt, blight, fungus aphids and all those other nasties aren't seen here.
