August 10,
We spent our first full day on the Olympic Peninsula checking out Sequim--pronounced Skwim. It is the lavender capital of North America but I thought the Lavender Wind Farm on Whidbey Island was prettier than any I saw here. It is also known as the home of a large herd of Roosevelt Elk, of which we saw none. We did however see many black-tail deer on our ride around town.
Sequim is a very pretty town in a very pretty area. So pretty that John Wayne chose to sail his boat in the area and donated the land for a large marina that bears his name. There are many, many boats along the Washington coast. We thought that even on their "warm" days, it was cool by the water and thought the season would be very short. Many of their boats were enclosed with probably a heater!!
We went to Marlyn Nelson Park-second picture-and saw a beach typical of the coast here, rocky with alot of driftwood, ruggedly beautiful.
We then followed The Dungeness Scenic Loop which took us to the Northern end of town with beautiful views of the Dungeness Spit. At the end of the Spit is the Dungeness Lighthouse, accessible only by foot. We chose not to take the walk but got good pictures with the telephoto lens.
